Beyond Kuala Lumpur: Why Kuala Selangor Deserves a Spot on Your Malaysia Itinerary

Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia isn’t just Kuala Lumpur, Just 55 kilometers southwest of the capital sits Kuala Selangor, a coastal town where untouched biodiversity takes center stage , home to soaring eagles and glowing fireflies that most travelers never even know to look for.

Where Kuala Lumpur is all skyscrapers and city lights, Kuala Selangor is the opposite. This river-mouth town remains remarkably natural, wrapped in mangrove forest and home to several protected species. Despite being far from the big city, there’s no shortage of memorable things to do here.

Watching Eagles Hunt at Sky Mirror Jetty

For travelers who love outdoor experiences, Kuala Selangor offers something special: watching a flock of eagles hunt for food in the wild. To see , and even feed , these birds, head to Sky Mirror Jetty on Jalan Sultan Mahmud, Kuala Selangor.

From the jetty, visitors board a boat that follows a guided tour out to the spot where the eagles hunt. Prices start from around RM35 per person (roughly Rp154,000).

Before the tour begins, everyone is required to wear a life jacket for safety. Once geared up, it’s straight onto the boat , each vessel can carry up to 18 passengers.

The boat captain, who also serves as the guide, steers through the mangrove forest toward the “nesting ground” where the eagles gather. The species you’ll spot here is the Brahminy Kite, found across a wide range spanning India, Southeast Asia, and Australia.

Scientifically known as Haliastur indus, this bird is easy to identify by its white feathers covering the head down through the belly, contrasted against a reddish-brown back , which is exactly why it’s also known in India as the red-backed sea eagle.

As the boat approaches the eagles mid-feed, the captain cuts the engine so the noise doesn’t disturb them. The eagles feast on fish living throughout the mangrove ecosystem.

From a distance, the eagles can be seen swooping in every direction , some diving remarkably low over the water’s surface to snatch their prey. The atmosphere turns lively as the birds “feast” together above the water.

To draw even more eagles in, the captain scatters chopped fish across the surface. The whole spectacle lasts around 45 minutes before the boat heads back to the jetty.

A Seafood Feast in Kuala Selangor

Kuala Selangor

After watching the eagles hunt, it’s time to feed yourself. Thanks to its coastal location, Kuala Selangor is well known for excellent seafood.

We headed to Qun Hua Kuala Selangor Seafood for a seafood feast. Fresh fish are displayed right at the restaurant’s entrance, and diners can pick exactly which one they want , grilled or fried, whichever you prefer.

Beyond fish, there’s also shellfish, prawns, and crab to choose from. Once you’ve picked your seafood, the kitchen staff transform it into a full spread.

It doesn’t take long before the table fills up: crispy fried prawns, battered fried squid, crab in salted egg sauce, shellfish in black pepper sauce, chicken katsu, and fish in sweet-and-sour sauce , with stir-fried broccoli rounding things out as the vegetable side.

That night became a delicious Chinese-style seafood dinner at Qun Hua, capping off a sweet day of activities in Kuala Selangor.

Chasing Fireflies in the Mangroves

After the seafood dinner, the day’s tour wrapped up with one more highlight: a firefly-watching tour. Fireflies have grown rare in many parts of Indonesia, but in Kuala Selangor, they still thrive thanks to the area’s largely untouched natural environment.

Fireflies are a strong indicator of a healthy ecosystem , these insects simply can’t survive in a damaged environment. That night, the mangrove groves were lit up with their soft, blinking glow.

The Kuala Selangor tour left us with a simple takeaway: the more nature is preserved, the more it gives back in return. Tourists keep coming, the local economy keeps turning, and the surrounding community continues to benefit.
