After spending the day wandering among the desert’s otherworldly limestone pillars until sunset, nightfall at The Pinnacles reveals an entirely different kind of beauty. Tour guide Alicia invites the whole group to look up.
A Sky Untouched by City Lights
Free from any city light pollution, the night sky over The Pinnacles is nothing short of spectacular. Thousands of stars scatter across the darkness, creating a view that’s nearly impossible to find in urban areas. One by one, Alicia points out the constellations, sharing the stories behind them and the role they once played as navigational guides for sailors and explorers of the past.
“People in ancient times used these constellations to find their way. Look, you can see all kinds of constellations up there,” Alicia said, pointing a laser pointer toward the sky for the tour group in late May.
Total Darkness, Total Silence
The experience becomes even more memorable once every light is switched off. In an instant, the desert transforms into a naturally dark space, lit only by starlight. The only sound is the occasional breeze sweeping across the sand and limestone.
In that stillness, the night sky reveals itself at its absolute best. Thousands of stars become clearly visible to the naked eye. Some participants even brought their own telescopes from Perth to get a closer look at celestial objects.
Alicia and her team also bring along binoculars, allowing tour participants to feel like the stars are just within reach.
A Perfect Ending to a Day in the Desert
This simple yet magical moment serves as the perfect closing chapter to a full day of exploring The Pinnacles Desert. Not long after, participants climb back aboard the bus for the journey back to Perth.
“Please get some rest. I’ll get you back to Perth safely,” Alicia said before the drive began.
The bus rolled through the night toward Perth, leaving behind a desert landscape scattered with unique rock formations and a starlit sky that felt like it belonged to another world entirely.
