Emirates A380 Superjumbo Just Made Its First-Ever Landing in Jakarta, Here’s What Makes It So Special

Emirates A380

An Emirates Airbus A380 has finally touched down at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport for the first time. With its massive scale, this aircraft carries a set of specifications that make it one of the most iconic passenger planes in the world.

The superjumbo arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Saturday, August 8, 2026. Operating as flight EK358 from Dubai, the aircraft carried around 600 passengers.

The flight had a special purpose: transporting the AC Milan and Chelsea football squads, who had just wrapped up their pre-season tour matches in Jakarta. Chelsea and AC Milan faced off in a friendly at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium as part of the Indonesia Super Cup 2026, before the Emirates A380 flew AC Milan’s squad back home to Italy.

This marked the first time an Emirates A380 had ever landed at Soekarno-Hatta , though interestingly, not the very first A380 to touch down there at all. A Singapore Airlines A380 previously made an emergency landing at the airport back in 2012 during a Sydney-Singapore route diversion. Still, Emirates’ arrival marked the aircraft’s first-ever scheduled visit to the Indonesian capital, and its first true showcase moment in the country.

Emirates confirmed the flight was a one-off special service tied to the football clubs’ tour, not a regular addition to its Jakarta route network. The airline currently operates 14 weekly flights between Dubai and Jakarta using other wide-body aircraft, along with two daily flights between Dubai and Denpasar, Bali.

Just How Big Is the A380?

The Airbus A380 is the largest passenger aircraft in the world, dwarfing the wide-body jets typically used for international flights.

According to Airbus, the A380 measures 72.7 meters in length and 24.1 meters in height, with a wingspan of nearly 80 meters , 79.8 meters, to be exact.

Emirates’ own website puts that scale into perspective: the aircraft’s length is roughly equivalent to two blue whales end to end, while its height matches about five adult giraffes stacked on top of each other.

That enormous wingspan is specifically engineered to generate enough lift to get an aircraft of this size off the ground.

A Double-Decker Design With Serious Passenger Capacity

The A380 features two passenger decks running nearly the full length of the fuselage. How many passengers it can carry depends entirely on the cabin configuration.

Emirates offers several configurations, with capacity ranging from 484 to 615 passengers. A long-haul two-class configuration, for example, can carry up to 615 passengers, while a three-class configuration holds between 489 and 517 passengers.

Engine, Range, and Cruising Altitude

Emirates’ A380 fleet runs on either Engine Alliance GP7200 or Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines. With that power, the aircraft can fly up to roughly 15,000 kilometers and cruises at approximately Mach 0.85.

The plane can also reach a cruising altitude of around 43,100 feet , more than 13,000 meters. Combined with its range, that makes the A380 purpose-built for long-haul international flights.

Luxury on Board

Luxury is another defining trait of the Emirates A380 experience. Depending on the cabin configuration, passengers can find First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class seating. Some Emirates A380s also feature an Onboard Lounge and Shower Spa exclusively for premium-class passengers.

Despite the buzz surrounding its arrival, the Emirates A380 has not yet become a regular scheduled flight at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport , for now, its Jakarta debut remains a rare, one-time event.
